Seven Deltans Receive Unsung Heros Award For Community Development By Evelyn Okonma

As a means of fostering positive change in the socio economic strata, no less than seven young Deltans have received awards for their positive contribution to the community.The award was tagged the Unsung Heroes Awards, an Initiative of the Delta Economic Summit Group (DESG). In the words of the Group's Director General, Mr. Ekenem Isichei, "The Unsung Heroes Award is an Initiative organized to recognize and encourage individuals that are contributing significantly to their local communities. Okowa Urges State Assemblies To Pass The Constitutional Amendment Bill

DELTA State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has told States’ Houses of Assembly to ensure the passage of Constitutional Amendment Bill when sent to them by the National Assembly. Okowa who stated this when he received the Conference of Speakers of States’ Legislatures in Nigeria led by its Chairman and Speaker of Bauchi State House of Assembly, Mr. Abubakar Suleiman, at Government House, Asaba, Friday night, said as states’ legislatures, the onus was on them to pass the Constitutional amendments in the interest of the nation. Delta is 2nd least poor state in Nigeria – NBS

The Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Delta ranked as second least poor state in the country. The bureau, in its latest Poverty Index Report, ranked Delta second after Lagos among the states with low poverty rate, and said that 40.1 per cent of Nigeria’s total population was poor. According to it, an average of four out of 10 individuals in Nigeria have real per capita expenditures below N137, 430 per year, meaning that monthly income of an individual in this category is less than N11,500 while income per day is N383.03. Delta State University Amendment Bill Passed Into Law

The bill to amend the Delta State University Law 1998 Cap D47 of Delta State 2008 and for other matters connected therewith has been passed into law by the state’s house of assembly. The deputy majority leader, Honourable Kenneth Preyor, who led the debate  at plenary argued saying, “Arising from the creation of the Dennis Osadebe University, which was formerly Awian campus of the Delta State University, Abraka, there is urgent need to amend some few sections of the Delta State University Law 1998 Cap D47, which means the Delta State University Abraka will now have two campuses which is Abraka (Main) campus and Oleh campus as against the previous three campuses.” Preyor then listed the faculties that will now be located at the Abraka main campus.
